A new drive-thru chicken eatery is taking shape at a construction site on Gull Road. A Popeyes drive-thru and fast food restaurant is being built at 3800 Gull Road in Kalamazoo Township, according to township documents.

The Popeyes received site plan approval in October 2022, said Kyle Mucha of the Kalamazoo Township Planning and Zoning Department. The developer first obtained a rezoning from the township in 2022, going from C-1, local commercial, to corridor commercial, C-2, to allow a drive-thru.

Construction is visible at the site today, with the building exterior up and windows installed, including two drive-thru windows. A car wash building was demolished to make way for the 2,515-square-foot building, township documents state.

The plan includes 20 vehicle parking spaces and two motorcycle parking spaces. It shows a two-lane drive-thru configuration wrapping around the building. It includes the planting of some trees and shrubs. Job listings were recently posted for the incoming restaurant, including positions of general manager, assistant manager and crew member. The nationwide fast-food chicken chain was born near New Orleans in 1972 and has since expanded to over 3,800 restaurants globally, according to the company. Popeyes has made headlines in recent years for its chicken sandwich that went viral on social media, which reportedly had the restaurant struggling to meet demand at times.

A 2015 store opening on West Main Street in Kalamazoo attracted long lines of customers. A different Popeyes operated for years at 3300 Gull Road in Comstock Township before it closed years ago.

The property is owned by Abygull, Inc., which lists an address in Burr Ridge, Illinois. MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette could not reach developers to answer questions, including the timeline for the restaurant opening.
