Tech giant Apple announced Monday that it plans to open an Apple Manufacturing Academy later this year in downtown Detroit.

The academy will be aimed at helping companies transition to advanced manufacturing, the announcement said. Apple engineers, along with experts from universities such as Michigan State, would consult at the academy with small and midsize businesses on how to implement artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing techniques.

The announcement didn’t give a precise location in downtown for the academy, or say how many people would be employed there.

The academy is expected to offer free in-person and online courses, with a skills development curriculum in areas such as manufacturing process optimization and project management.

“The courses will help drive productivity, efficiency, and quality in companies’ supply chains,” the announcement said.

Separately, Apple is expected to open an Apple Store later this year along Woodward in downtown, just north of the Shinola Hotel. Monday’s announcement did not offer details about the store or say precisely when it will open. It would be the seventh Apple Store in Michigan.

The tech giant has had an Apple Developer Academy in Detroit since 2021. The program has reportedly graduated nearly 1,000 Detroit residents with coding and workforce skills. The Apple Developer Academy is now a partnership between Apple and MSU, and sessions are held in the First National Building at 600 Woodward.
