After 17 years, Rockwell Republic is closing in downtown Grand Rapids.

The restaurant and bar, which opened in 2008 at 45 S. Division Ave., announced its closure Monday, Feb. 24, on social media.

“Even with the current fiscally challenging environment for restaurants and bars, and so many closures recently, the decision to close this restaurant was incredibly difficult, especially when it involves a dedicated team of hardworking individuals who have supported one another like family,” the restaurant stated. “While every one of our team members will be offered a position at one of our affiliated restaurants, it does not lessen the sadness of breaking the bonds that were formed here.”

Rockwell Republic is owned by Restaurant Partners Management, which owns and operates 12 restaurant brands in west and northwest Michigan, including Beltline Bar, Sundance Bar & Grill, Grand Coney Diner and more.

The statement announcing Rockwell Republic’s closure did not provide a closing date. But the restaurant’s Google listing says the business is permanently closed, and the only information on Rockwell’s website is a farewell message.

Since opening, Rockwell Republic has offered American and Asian cuisine, high-end spirits, craft cocktails and more. It was located in a renovated 140-year-old building in the Heartside District of downtown Grand Rapids.

“Over the past 17 years, we have been honored with numerous awards and accolades, recognized for the best happy hour, best sushi, best Bloody Mary’s, and best brunch,” the restaurant said in a statement.

The popular bar and restaurant was launched by brothers Dave and Paul Reinert, and was sold in 2016 to Restaurant Management Partners.
