Workers are tearing down the former Baron Drawn Steel plant in central Toledo this week.
The facility opened in 1964 and shuttered about 20 years ago, laying off the 85 remaining employees. Since then the plant’s contaminated structures have steadily deteriorated.
But now the Lucas County Land Bank says it is leading a remediation effort of the 7-acre brownfield site located at 1758 Dorr Street, in the Clinton Park neighborhood.
The land bank said in an announcement this week that half of the $815,000 project will be covered by a program through the Ohio Department of Development. The rest will be paid for using federal American Rescue Plan Act money appropriated by Toledo City Council.
Environmental cleanup work was conducted by Midwest Environmental, while demolition is underway this week by D&R Demolition and Removal.
It’s unclear how the property might ultimately be redeveloped, but the land bank said discussions will soon get underway with local economic development officials.
“Clinton Park neighborhood residents have waited far too long to see something good happen at this property, but good things come to those who wait,” David Mann, president and CEO of the land bank, said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful to federal, state, and local leaders for dedicating funding to clean up this eyesore and ready the land for redevelopment.”
