Monroe Township golf course to be sold, redeveloped by InSite

The 142-acre Harbor Dunes Golf Club in Monroe Charter Township will soon be transformed into an automotive-related warehousing and distribution center, township supervisor Al Barron announced Tuesday.

Barron revealed the first details of the proposed project at the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce’s December Koffee Club event, at which elected officials from across the region discussed ongoing and upcoming projects in their communities.

The supervisor said that Illinois-based developer InSite Real Estate LLC is expected to close this month on the golf course located off of LaPlaisance Rd. He also said that the developer is expected to appear at the township’s February 7 planning commission meeting to present the site plan for their proposed, 1.1 million-square-foot building.

This proposal is similar in size and scope to the Ford Motor Company distribution center project that InSite is overseeing construction of at the former Nike Missile Base in Frenchtown Township.

“Their plan is to break ground in May…,” Barron said. “Upon completion, they expect (the facility will create) at least 200 jobs. It’s just finding people to fill those jobs now.”

Originally called the Links at Lake Erie Golf Course, the property was rechristened Harbor Dunes four years ago when the current owners took over and leased the land to the current operator. In addition to the golf course, which remains open based on weather, the property also houses Mulligan’s Indoor Golf inside Harbor Dunes’ clubhouse. The golf simulators are currently open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. They will also be open on Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
